A Message from Mingyur Rinpoche about the Recent Terrorist Attacks
November 30, 2015
I am very sorry to hear about the recent terrorist attacks. Many people have asked, “What should we do when we face situations like this?” There are two things we can do to help: our own practice, and our work for others.
From our side, when we practice we can do loving-kindness and compassion practices. In the beginning whether we meditate or do any virtuous action, it is important to set the right motivation by thinking, “I do this practice to help those people who are victims or otherwise affected by the terrorist attacks, and to help all beings be free, and liberated from all problems.” Then we do our meditation or virtuous action. In the end, we dedicate our virtue, our merit from practice, our virtue from anything we do, and from any virtuous attitudes such as generosity or patience; we dedicate this to benefit those who were victims of the terrorist attacks and for all sentient beings. We can also pray for people to be happy and free, and offer whatever positive wishes we have. This is how we should practice.
How can we help others? We begin by helping people around us. We cannot help everybody out there, so begin with friends or family members who might have been affected by the terrorist attacks. They may be psychologically affected or have other problems, so give them positive support. If we have resources then we can donate to the victims, or we may be able to help through our words. We can positively influence those around us, and when they in turn positively influence others, this will help many people.
I will pray for all of you, and I will dedicate my meditation and other virtues as well.
