The Three Wisdoms

In this video, Mingyur Rinpoche explains that there are different ways in which we can know something, ranging from intellectual to experiential understanding. He speaks about his own time of intensive study in which he developed strategies for going beyond mere intellectual knowledge, developing a lasting form of wisdom that remains with him to this day.

Reflection Question

  • The three wisdoms consist of the wisdom born from: listening (or studying), contemplating, and meditating. In service of articulating this distinction, Mingyur Rinpoche gives the example of learning to drive a car. Are there similar, pragmatic situations in your own life in which you progressed from a theoretical understanding to an applied form of wisdom? If so, please explain.
